All kinds of information from around the world can be found by using directories, search engines, and meta-search engines.  Thanks to Jerry Yang and David Filo, we now have yahoo, which started off as a list of webpages that were shared among students.  This list became Jerry’s guide and in 1990’s it was renamed, YAHOO! It is now a network tool created and arranged by humans. Using human editors to put together a directory of web resources is both a strength and a weakness. These search tools are linked by easy to understand categories and keywords.  Within the search tools, there is a hierarchy of information and categories with direct access to various links.  There are various shortcuts that can be used to get you to your desired websites.  You can also “drill-down” or dumb-down the directory categories clicking links. Even though the directory may be very useful, it can also lead you to a bunch of useless sites.  The appropriate webpages may not be pulled up during your search because the webpage may have been rejected by the editors.
